The fatal attack on a Mormon church in Michigan this weekend was interpreted by Benny Johnson and many others as more evidence of a very literal attack on Christianity and its values. It came just a week after Charlie Kirk’s memorial, at which he was hailed as both a “prophet” and a “martyr” in a service infused with abundant Biblical commentary.

For some, all of this points to an overdue revival of Christian values in a culture which has sought to eradicate them. But others are warning about a rise in so-called Christian Nationalism – a hardline supremacist movement which uses faith as a fig leaf for uncompromising views; threatening to undermine the separation of church and state.
