Piers Morgan Uncensored is joined by human rights lawyer David Haigh and boxing promoter Frank Warren to debate whether Lionel Messi is the latest example of ‘sportswashing’ as high-profile footballers continue to receive criticism for going to countries with questionable human rights laws.
Piers believes that every country has black marks on its history and human rights records so it is difficult to know where to draw the line. David agrees that there is hypocrisy within the sports morality debate as many flawed countries are criticising others on human rights affairs – but he does believe there could be more done to improve regulations with issues such as ownership of sports teams.
Frank then adds that no matter the debate you cannot blame the players for going and making the best decision for their career – especially if they end up shining a light on human rights issues for young people.
