  1. Grace Hopper’s compiler converted English terms into machine code understood by computers. The development of assembly language eventually led to the creation of compilers like Hopper’s A-OI compiler, which translated business language into machine language in order to run programs on a computer when its operating system was unavailable. Hopper maintained that creating a programming language that would be simpler than machine code so operators could write programs without having a background in computers was possible due to her extensive knowledge of mathematics. By developing programs that used word commands rather than symbols, Hopper believed that more people would feel comfortable using computers, particularly for business applications such as payroll. Making computers accessible to people without an engineering or math background was especially important at a time when computer companies were marketing their products to the private sector. In the meantime, she published her first paper on the subject, compilers, in 1952.
